How to Start a Slo-Pitch League

A league is a tournament spread over a summer. The planning is the same, with a few extra things to get right.

Book the fields first

Find out which nights you can have, on how many diamonds, and for how many weeks. Municipal parks usually take bookings months ahead and returning leagues get first pick, so ask early.

One diamond on one weeknight usually fits two games. That is enough for a 4 team league where everyone plays once a week.

Work out how many teams you can take

Games per week is diamonds times games per night times nights. Each game uses two teams, so with every team playing once a week you can take twice as many teams as you have weekly games.

  • 1 diamond, 1 night, 2 games: 4 teams.
  • 2 diamonds, 1 night, 2 games each: 8 teams.
  • 2 diamonds, 2 nights, 2 games each: 16 teams.

Set the fee and the rules

Add up the field rental, balls, umpires, insurance if your park needs it, and prizes or a wind-up. Divide by the number of teams and round up a little.

Write down the rules: co-ed ratios, roster size, home run cap, innings or time limit, mercy rule, how rain-outs are made up, and how the standings and tiebreakers work.

Find teams

Start with people you know: workplaces, existing tournament teams, community Facebook groups. Offer a free-agent list for players without a team. Once you have more teams than one division needs, split them by level so games stay close.

Build the season schedule

Decide how many times teams play each other. In an 8 team league, playing everyone twice is 14 games each, which is 14 weeks at one game a week. Check that early and late time slots are shared fairly and that no team is always on the worst diamond.

The Softball League Scheduler builds the season from your nights and fields, and tells you if it does not fit in the weeks you have.

Plan for rain

Leave one or two spare weeks at the end for make-up games, and tell teams at the start how a rained-out game is rescheduled. Post changes in one place, not across three group chats.

Finish with playoffs

Most leagues end with a playoff night or weekend seeded from the final standings. Decide at the start how many teams make it, and whether it is single or double elimination, so nobody is surprised in August.
