Pool play, then a playoff bracket
Teams are split into pools of 3 to 5. Each team plays the others in its pool, and the pool standings seed a playoff bracket. This is the standard weekend format because every team gets a guaranteed number of games and the best teams still meet at the end.
Pools of 4 give each team 3 pool games. Sixteen teams in 4 pools is 24 pool games, plus 15 playoff games for a single elimination bracket.
Bigger events often split the playoffs into A, B and C brackets by seed, so teams finish the weekend against opponents at their own level.
Round robin only
Every team plays every other team once and the final standings decide the winner. It is the fairest format and needs no bracket, but the game count grows fast: 4 teams is 6 games, 6 teams is 15, 8 teams is 28.
Use it for small events, or for one-day tournaments with 4 to 6 teams. Try it with the Softball Round Robin Generator.
Single elimination
Lose once and you are out. A single elimination bracket always has one game fewer than the number of teams: 8 teams is 7 games, 16 teams is 15. When the team count is not 4, 8, 16 or 32, the top seeds get a first-round bye.
It is the quickest way to find a winner, which is why it is usually the playoff stage after pool play rather than the entire tournament.
Double elimination
A team must lose twice to go out. Losing in the winners side drops a team to the losers side, where one more loss ends its weekend. The two sides meet in the final.
It takes roughly twice as many games: 8 teams is 14 or 15, 16 teams is 30 or 31. The extra game happens when the team from the losers side wins the first final, because the other finalist has then lost only once.
See the Double Elimination Softball Bracket page, or pick your team count from the bracket sizes.
Which one should you use?
- 4 to 6 teams, one day: round robin, with a final between the top two if there is time.
- 8 to 16 teams, a weekend: pool play, then single elimination.
- 8 to 16 teams and plenty of field time: pool play, then double elimination.
- More than 16 teams: pool play, then several brackets split by seed.
- Very short on field time: single elimination only.
